Another great family film about how we can all make a difference. Growing up Joe had a really tough life and was always in trouble. As an adult he is berated for praying on the football field, and stands up for himself, for his freedoms and rights. This brings on hate messages and makes their lives miserable. It's also another of God's twists for his life considering how he started out. God can use anyone; what we experience in life gives us skills and strengths. It's a really good movie for everyone to watch and share about.

Amazing. No matter how many stories you hear about war it's always heart wrenching in its own unique way. Nadia is a girl who was raised in Polish nobility. Her father befriended an American photographer and confided in him. As the Germans begin to invade Poland, things change rapidly, and David promises her father to see Nadia safely to England. Their journey changes their lives forever, as well as some of those they encounter. Gripping story...you just have to know what will happen next, how they'll get out. So much sadness, but they also learn to recognize the miracles that happen along the way. Very well told, mostly documenting actual events.

About the Author

To keep from freezing in the great white north, Angela K Couch cuddles under quilts with her laptop. Winning short story contests, being a semi-finalist in ACFW’s Genesis Contest, and a finalist in the 2016 International Digital Awards also helped warm her up. As a passionate believer in Christ, her faith permeates the stories she tells. Her martial arts training, experience with horses, and appreciation for good romance sneak in as well. When not writing, she stays fit (and toasty warm) by chasing after five munchkins.

When I first decided to set a story during the invasion of Poland, I was woefully unprepared for the pain and horror I found there. I wasn’t new to World War II and had just finished writing A Rose for the Resistance, which is set in France during the war and deals with the resistance and the Normandy invasion. The atrocities and genocide in Poland cut so much deeper.

In the early hours of September 1, 1939, the small town of Wielun, Poland, woke to a shower of bombs on their community. They did not house an army or warehouses, only homes and civilian businesses. Wielun was not the only town or village targeted—demonstrating the Nazi goal to spread fear and death. Six months earlier, Hitler had promised that if Poland did not bow to his wishes, he would wipe them off the map. Over the next month, and more so in the following six years, he came very close to succeeding.

For the full month of September 1939, while German armies rolled across the country, the city of Warsaw endured daily bombardment. Homes, workplaces, churches on Sunday morning, the Warsaw maternity hospital— nowhere was safe. On the tenth of September, someone recorded seventeen separate air raids over the city. I was moved to tears while viewing photographs of women and children who had been shot in the streets and fields by the bombers after they had dropped their payloads over the city.

No one came to their rescue.

Poland was abandoned by its allies to the Nazis.

So how do you write about all that and more while still trying to keep hope alive in the story and in the characters who have to live through such a frightening and demoralizing history?

The Lost Daughter by Gill Paul

A family tragedy. A fight for love. A long-buried secret.

Russia 1918, the Tsar and Tsarina Romanov were executed in the Revolution.  There were conflicting reports as to whether their five children were also executed. Because of the opulence and romance of a royal family, it was hoped that one or more of the children had escaped and hid themselves. I remember as I was growing up hearing different stories of what could have happened, mostly about Anastasia. I had not heard anything about Maria. It was interesting to read about her and what she may have been like. The incredible detail of the writing makes you feel as though you are there. Not a quick read, it takes you through the pain, suffering, starvation and cruel living conditions in Russia at that time, also weaving in a more recent day (1973) character in Australia. Smoothly done. Holds your interest until the very end. Mild sexual content.

High as the Heavens by Kate Breslin

Beautiful, rich story. An author you'll love.
Christian historical. A novel of spies and underground fighters in WW2. It amazes me that with all the war stories, there are still so many more.This is intricate. The author strove to show the hardships of those who lived in occupied countries like Belgium and France, and to share the remarkable people of the Great War who worked behind enemy lines. You'll become completely engrossed as the characters come fully to life, full of grief and pain, and very little hope, yet doing their best to fight back in ways they could. And what they did was significant. People were so incredibly smart and resourceful even when they seemed completely dominated, yet they contributed to the fall of the German army. Excellent story to get lost in!

Deeply moving.

It's November 30, 1864, Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee. Lizzie is the Governess to two children there. They look out and see an army forming between their house and the neighbors. The southern army here, federal army drenched in there. Around 20,000 men. The battle was fought over 2 1/2 miles, with nearly 10,000 killed, wounded or taken prisoner. Read that last sentence again. Can you really imagine it?

Their house quickly fills up with wounded. They tear up all the cloth they have - clothes, bed linens, towels, even underwear and Lizzies wedding dress, for bandages. She has skills learned from her father who is a pharmacist, and is able to help the surgeon. She learns that her fiancé is somewhere on the battlefield and goes to look for him - getting an even bigger shock of her life. The hem of her dress is soaked 6 inches with the blood. (Yet just a fraction of what Armageddon will be.) It literally came to their doorstep. Even the children join in helping the wounded in the house. The depth of sorrow and pain, and the eventual joy and love of the living.

Roland was one of the soldiers who had been battered, both legs and much of a hand. He and Lizzie have a special bond that grows through the story, as they both learn how to live with all the changes to their world, their lives. Since they lost the battle there, all of the soldiers on the losing side are supposed to go to Federal prison. They are given permission to stay until better healed, in the care of the McGavocks and local Catholic Sisters. Their mending is difficult, and gives them all a chance to know each other better. Relationships are forged between them all, including two black slaves. An incredible story telling from different angles of those involved. Well done, illustrating an incredible number of people.

Searching for You by Jody Hedlund

"Maybe one day in the future, they’d no longer notice the cracks in pieces of their life that God had put back together."

It was so good to pick up the story of the orphan train and three sisters again. Sophie was the youngest,  who ran away from the other two sisters as they sorted out their lives, always trying to provide a way to support them all. Sophie also took on the responsibility of two other very small orphans from the time they were babies. So many orphans lived on the streets of New York City,

surviving any way they could. When Mr Brace started the orphan trains it gave so many a new start, although no system can be perfect. A dangerous situation forced Sophia and her friend to flee the city with the little ones, and they were lucky enough to be included on a train. But it's not all smooth sailing for them, and they continue to have trying times. Heart wrenching details and well written characters make you endeared to them and feel all the pain and frustration of trying to adjust. And feel the love they have for one another. You'll fervently want all the best for each of them. God can bring the best to rough trails and make a way that's better than anything we could imagine for ourselves. The journey makes us who we are.

Where Treasure Hides by Johnnie Alexander Donley

 

I was hooked in the first chapter. Set in the early 1940s before and during Hitler’s reign of terror, this is a totally engulfing story. It starts out with a pampered wealthy family’s daughter traveling through England for their art gallery. She sees a soldier defending a Jewish boy about to board an orphan train, when his violin (his only possession) is being taken away from him. The soldier suggests that if the violin belongs to him, then he will be able to play it. The boy plays beautifully, and the soldier stands by until he knows the boy is safely on the train with the violin. It brings Alison and Ian together, and it’s ‘love at first sight’. Only she holds back because of her family’s ‘curse’.

This is a story of the excruciating ups and downs during war time of pain, love and sacrifice. It’s impossible to put down! I do so hope that there will be a second book that will continue the story.
