These Tangled Threads, A Novel of Biltmore by Sarah Loudin Thomas

 

The people in this story all start with being painfully separated from their families, coming together in different ways to work for Biltmore House, dealing with their pain differently, yet they're connected. Very good story. A special soft spot for me is the weaving and woodworking crafts they did while working at the special Biltmore Estate. Great read. Very heartfelt.

Finally His Bride by Jody Hedlund

I became fully invested in the characters right away, and their lives growing up together in Manchester, England. Things got especially tough there and Willow's father signed her up to leave for a bride ship to Vancouver Island the next morning. Caleb couldn't take being separated from her so found a way to follow. I cared so much that I would have written them a story myself from there if necessary. But their story is beautiful as they both learn to grow and make a new life. Some very tense and dangerous times; can be hard to put down. Such a beautiful place to start over, with great opportunities to start a new and better life if you want to work hard.  Excellent read. I highly recommend reading the Bride Ships series.

A spy story set in Austria and Prague after WW2 was over. There were struggling factions fighting over who would take over the cities. It was also a time when the treasures that had been taken from Jews during the occupation were being sought by rightful owners and thieves alike. For Sophie, centered in music and artifacts and Simon, centered in chess, they each were hiding secrets about the work they were doing, just as they had during the war. They were both from wealthy, manipulating families. Mostly a dark tale with murder, mystery, secrets and constant danger for them all. Quite intricate the way the twists come together; makes you want to know how their lives will turn out.

The Golden Bride by Kimberly Woodhouse

Interesting story of the early days of San Francisco, during the days of the gold rush. Tens of thousands of people descended on the area in just a matter of months. Two prosperous young men were trying to live in kindness and goodness amongst all the sin and corruption. They were the best of friends. Then Daniel's sister came to live with him. He owned a restaurant and she began to help him, fitting right in with him and his friend.

It's very realistic, through their thoughts seeing the struggle and difficulties of making a way for goodness when the evil around them was so strong. There wasn't any law or government, and there wasn't room for everyone. People lived and ran businesses out of tents. Discrimination, theft, all types of crime were unchecked. These characters all had and developed strong faith together, doing all they could to help others. Excellent investment in your time!

Where Treasure Hides by Johnnie Alexander Donley

 

I was hooked in the first chapter. Set in the early 1940s before and during Hitler’s reign of terror, this is a totally engulfing story. It starts out with a pampered wealthy family’s daughter traveling through England for their art gallery. She sees a soldier defending a Jewish boy about to board an orphan train, when his violin (his only possession) is being taken away from him. The soldier suggests that if the violin belongs to him, then he will be able to play it. The boy plays beautifully, and the soldier stands by until he knows the boy is safely on the train with the violin. It brings Alison and Ian together, and it’s ‘love at first sight’. Only she holds back because of her family’s ‘curse’.

This is a story of the excruciating ups and downs during war time of pain, love and sacrifice. It’s impossible to put down! I do so hope that there will be a second book that will continue the story.
