Excellent read. Easy to get caught up and interested in both Rose, Caleb and the kids. Then the mystery deepens and the pages turn faster until you know what happens. Likeable characters, faith lessons, heart wrenching moments. Rose is trying to be safe but steps out of her comfort zone for the kids from the orphanage and finds healing through the trials. Caleb is trying a new line of work and wondering if he's made the best decision. A nice couple you'll like getting to know and want the best for.

Joining an Orphan Home with Foster Care

Rose Sinclair makes a quick appearance in the third Stone Creek Brides novel, Scandals and Mercies as the head nurse at the local unwed mother’s home. With a tender heart and hurts of her own, she desires to help in a different way and moves to a nursing position at the town’s small orphanage. It is a loving sanctuary to around a dozen children and youth waiting for forever families.

During the era of orphan trains, the Child and Family Services of Michigan was established in 1891. They started “receiving homes” which cared for children with the goal of adoption. By 1906, the organization advocated for children to be placed in foster care when they couldn’t remain with their natural families. Thus began the trend toward foster care rather than orphanages.

The care received in the Anna and Jared Barrington Home for Children falls in between the two. In Rumors and Promises, the first Stone Creek Brides novel, readers see a glimpse into Gloria Myles’s life and how she became the guardian for her granddaughter, Elise. From this situation came her passion to care for orphans, as well as her desire to memorialize her daughter and son-in-law.

While most orphanages were often harmful institutions, I’d like to think that there were places like the Anna and Jared Barrington Home for Children, though I may have taken a bit of literary license.

I thought about what might happen if some of the children had the opportunity to be reunited with a faraway relative. How may that have taken place? Enter private investigator Caleb Ellis, who has lost several people he loved. He’s on a mission to bring together the scattered family.

In Wounds and Rescues, Rose becomes deeply attached to orphans Sam and Nellie Tubbs. The childhood trauma she experienced prompts her to become fiercely protective of them. From small-town Michigan of 1903 to the hills of Montana, she embarks on a journey of forgiveness, healing, and facing the past.

After the Shadows by Amanda Cabot

 

1882 Christian Historical.  Emily returned to her family home after her husband died, then her mother and father. Lies in a letter to her family from her husband had kept them apart, which she just learned of. Very painful story, yet poignant. Loving others, learning to trust God, learning to trust others, coping with death and mystery. Well written, keeps you page turning to get to the answers. Builds a small town with all kinds of personalities, some difficult to live with.

The Confession Musical Movie

 

Based on the book by Beverly Lewis - ONLY IN MOVIE THEATERS FEBRUARY 20, 2023

I read the book - it was very good. With this team of actors it looks like it was really well done.

THE CONFESSION MUSICAL was adapted for the stage by Emmy-Nominated screenwriter Martha Bolton. The musical follows the story of Katie Lapp, a young Amish girl who discovers that her parents have been keeping a deep secret...that she is adopted. Katie decides to find her birth mother, defying the rules of her Amish village and risking a shunning. Meanwhile, Laura Mayfield, her wealthy birth mother who is battling an illness that might take her life, began searching for her long-lost daughter. Secretly plotting against Laura is her gold-digging husband Dylan (John Schneider). Dylan knows that if Katie is found, he will no longer inherit Laura’s fortune. With the help and prayers of her Christian housekeeper (Chonda Pierce), Laura hopes to foil Dylan’s plan and be reunited with her daughter.

While the story is dramatic, writer Martha Bolton sprinkles in humor, mostly from award-winning comedian Chonda Pierce as the maid and internationally renowned British comedian Colin Hearn as the English Butler. The music is powerful under the direction of multiple Grammy nominated Dan Posthuma and songwriter Wally Nason. The screen is filled with spectacular visuals using twenty actors and dancers and one of the largest LED screens in the country.

The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill by Julie Klassen

The first book in a new series, setting up the stories to follow.  You’ll enjoy getting to know the characters and want to read more to see how their lives and their community progress, somewhat reminiscent of the Mitford series.

The Bell Inn was left to Jane by her husband, who had died suddenly. Jane came from an aristocratic background with few skills to run an Inn. While married, her husband did not encourage her to participate in anything to do with the Inn. His mother and brother were his partners. Theora, his mother, grew up in the family that had run the Inn for years and it was part of her. When her son left the Inn to his wife, she decided to go to her sister’s house to stay, but that didn’t go as expected so she returned to the Inn she knew and loved. On return she discovered that the Inn had fallen into disrepair and was losing business. Add to that a local banker suddenly claiming there was a huge loan on the Inn – an amount that was practically impossible to repay – which would be a benefit to Patrick (the brother) who wanted to take the Inn over and turn it into something else.

The man who delivered the news to Jane of her husband’s death offered to stay on and work for the Inn and became a valuable asset. As the story progresses Jane has some leads to follow concerning her husband’s whereabouts when he was killed – or possibly murdered.

A rival Inn owner purchases Jane’s old home to turn it into competition as an Inn, but he also offers several suggestions to Jane about improving The Bell. The whole town enters into a competition between the two Inns for the right to have the Royal Mail delivery.

Love interest, deceit, intrigue and mystery. A great book on its own, but I can’t wait for the second book in the series to see what happens next!

Where Treasure Hides by Johnnie Alexander Donley

 

I was hooked in the first chapter. Set in the early 1940s before and during Hitler’s reign of terror, this is a totally engulfing story. It starts out with a pampered wealthy family’s daughter traveling through England for their art gallery. She sees a soldier defending a Jewish boy about to board an orphan train, when his violin (his only possession) is being taken away from him. The soldier suggests that if the violin belongs to him, then he will be able to play it. The boy plays beautifully, and the soldier stands by until he knows the boy is safely on the train with the violin. It brings Alison and Ian together, and it’s ‘love at first sight’. Only she holds back because of her family’s ‘curse’.

This is a story of the excruciating ups and downs during war time of pain, love and sacrifice. It’s impossible to put down! I do so hope that there will be a second book that will continue the story.
