Something Worth Doing by Jane Kirkpatrick

A Novel of an Early Suffragist

"Some things are worth doing regardless of how they turn out."

Abigail Scott Duniway was a true pioneer, traveling to Oregon by wagon train, then blazing trails for women's right to vote and equality for all. Based on a real person and her life, Jane Kirkpatrick is just the right person to tell this very detailed story. A natural born teacher herself, writing about strong, intelligent and caring women.
Abigail grew up knowing how difficult it was for her mother, bearing several children and being responsible for running a household, the work, and what it took out of her. She also saw how the lack of any rights affected women, who didn't have the legal right to own anything, or even the rights to their own children. Yet she herself became a mother of several children. She was blessed to have a supportive husband who loved her and learned to let her have her lead, most of the time. She spent her life trying to right the wrong for all, to get women's rights. Women were the last to get the right to vote. She was an excellent speaker and brilliant writer of books and speeches. She led and taught many. Excellent, informative read. Christian Historical. #SomethingWorthDoing #NetGalley

Redeeming Light by Annette Ohare

Christian Historical Texas 1900
Our lives can be such a muddle, taking us on paths we never dreamed of, connecting us with people in all kinds of various ways. We go through our lives, just living, pleased or irritated with people and situations around us. We also have unique ways that drive us. Then things happen. Sarah recently lost her father, who was a rancher with an esteemed breed of cattle. But they only seemed important to her. The rest of her family had other plans. She sticks to her guns and makes plans with her Uncle to continue ranching, bringing her stock to his ranch, even acting as trail boss herself in moving some stock to sale. She meets Frederick, a lawyer in her Uncle's firm. Her Uncle trust him, but Sarah isn't so sure. Well illustrated Christian lessons and growth, including how good Christians influence others' lives around them. Examples of prayers answered when disaster strikes. Perspectives, and people, change depending on the circumstances they are in. What is important becomes more clear. Excellent read!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Hazelanne by Linda Carroll-Bradd

https://www.amazon.com/Hazelanne-Widows-Wildcat-Ridge-Book-ebook/dp/B07PMFPJ4T/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Hazelanne&qid=1560906588&s=gateway&sr=8-1https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44453592-hazelanne?from_search=true

Widows of Wildcat Ridge book 15
1884 Utah Territory
"in order to survive, on occasion they [women] had to be more practical than romantic."
The name of the series gives a lot away. The story of Hazelanne is very interesting. She grew up taking care of her large family, but left to take some of the financial burden off by becoming a mail order bride. Not expecting what she got herself into. Her new husband had a farm, but wasn't pleasant at all. She was very adaptable - she was raised in a city, but learned quickly how to care for the animals and try to please her demanding, unloving husband. She'd only been married a short time when the Gold King mine blew up and most of the town's men were killed.
Brice was the "shotgun messenger" on the Wells Fargo stagecoach she had ridden to her new home in. He had been quite taken with her, so he went to the mass funeral, then impulsively married her afterwards just to give her his name. He returned to his job, only getting back to town long enough for dinner every Saturday. Engaging story of a woman who set out alone for a better life and did what she had to do, learning as she went.

It was nice to catch back up again with Nick Drake and his sister Lucy. They come from a (not always so nice) family who invents a valve used to pump water up multiple floors in buildings. (Something that we take so much for granted.) Nick is widowed with a little daughter. He is the main heir and has become a millionaire.

If you read the last book, you know that Nick is as nice as a guy can be, good as gold. He and Lucy are very caring and just want their invention to help the common man. Now Nick has become involved with city planning and a filtration plan for bringing in more potable water to meet demand, a project that was going to be second only to the Panama Canal in terms of size and scope.

Then we meet Rosalind, who was raised in Germany. She is a rare woman who has a doctorate in biochemistry and has been working with another doctor on chlorinating the water system to kill things like cholera. She and Nick are both motivated by their past. Not impressed with the available females in his circle, he is amazed that a woman can be interesting, let alone understand plumbing. But when Rosalind’s coworker makes a decision that goes against Nick’s belief and she’s drawn into it, it’s a shock to him and the community as well. A well woven story with dark secrets, mystery, danger, interesting historical facts, faith, trust and forgiveness. This is a series well worth having in your library.

Faith Journaling books by Ellie Claire

I just received these three journaling books in the mail. How exciting! It's always wonderful to receive a real book as a gift. Something tangible that you can hold in your hands. Each is unique and beautifully done, and they make a fabulous set. Really thick covers with lots of pretty embossed detailing. The pages are thick coated paper, great for water color and other art supplies.

Have you thought about doing Bible journaling? You see it everywhere you turn and it looks like it would be fun to do, but it's a bit intimidating to just jump right in and start coloring and writing in your book. These are a great way to get started or to improve/stretch your detailing skills. Each is instructional in its own way. With their clear instructional style, they will be a great guidance and also help you to develop your own unique style. Grab your watercolors, colored pencils and/or pens and thoroughly enjoy yourself!

Illuminate Your Story Journal

This is an instructional for illuminated letters. You know those beautiful drop caps that start a story in the old books. This is for each letter of the alphabet with five step illustrations, breaking down the illustrated letter. Then there is space for you to develop your own or copy theirs. After that there is a journaling space that starts with a beautiful quote from different sources.

"The Word of God is alive and powerful." Hebrews 4:12 is on the front inside jacket, and this Bible completely lives up to that. "Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions." Psalm 119:18 inside the back jacket. What a beautiful way to illustrate just that with this Bible.

Fabulous illustrations, definitions and timelines throughout, the Word in the New Living Translation, with a Study guide and illustrated topics on each page. This is a large, heavy volume that you'll want to keep out and refer to.  Great for a "coffee table" book. It will take a long time to go completely through this book, and I haven't compared this translation to the strict King James Version, but I am sure that there are fabulous lessons to learn within.  A fabulous gift - any time of year - for yourself or someone you love.

From Tyndale: The Illustrated Study Bible brings Scripture’s message to life by giving readers an entirely new visual study experience. Hundreds of information-rich windows to the Bible world instantly communicate foundational truths and complex information in an understandable, compelling way for today’s visual generation. The who, what, where, when, and why of the Bible come alive with stunning photos, illustrations, infographics, and full color maps integrated seamlessly with background material, study notes, and theme articles. The Illustrated Study Bible empowers readers to draw closer to God by opening their eyes to Scripture’s living, powerful message.
