The Watchmaker's Daughter by Dianne Haley

Switzerland 1942
I've always thought of Switzerland as being neutral. Just that. Anyone who went there was safe. Not very true at this time. Germany was threatening to invade, people were trying to escape from bordering countries and Switzerland didn't want to anger the Germans or be responsible for taking care of the refugees. There were Swiss police, the Swiss Army and Allies. Everyone was walking their own tightrope.  Valerie's father was a watchmaker, needing to continue his business to support him and his daughter and make as many sales as possible. They had to be nice to everyone.
Valerie felt the need to help Jews and the Resistance. Philippe is in the Swiss Army, excels in leadership but is not in charge, assigned to special work with maps of their defense system. It's a dangerous time for all of them, especially when things aren't right and suspicions run high, people are being killed. And things are going on all around them both that they don't know about, friends and foes become mixed up. Tense, intense reading, constantly pulling at your heart strings. Hard to put down.

A Distance Too Grand by Regina Scott

Our national parks began in a time of exploration and wonder . . .
FORT WILVERTON, ARIZONA TERRITORY, 1871

Meg was an excellent photographer, having worked with her father since she was little. Shortly after he died, she was hired by the Army to take pictures for an expedition to map part of the Grand Canyon. Can you imagine? That was still new territory. They wanted to find a way for wagon trains to navigate the area safely. They just weren't too pleased when they learned Meg was a woman. She knew the Captain who was in charge of the project, which didn't make it easier since she had turned down his marriage proposal when they were at West Point. But she had her reasons. Reasons that she went over and over again as they traveled together during this expedition. Beauty, mystery, hidden danger weave through this story, even murder. It was interesting to learn more about Cartography as the story went along too. Beautifully, heartfully told, you'll become Meg's champion too.

Impossible to put down!
Another excellent story from Sarah Sundin. I just love all of the WW2 stories that Sarah has written and I consider myself blessed to receive a copy for review. This one takes place in England just before and during D-day, the invasion at Normandy. Dorothy and Wyatt are both working at headquarters to plan for the invasion, and later Wyatt is on one of the Destroyers. What a great insight into this time and place! So much went on that we would never know except for Sarah, and there is so much detail here. Then of course the characters are anything but boring. Both families are a bit of a mess, but the story is intricately woven and you get to love them all, British and American. Another great hit for Christian Historical fiction! Can’t wait for the next in the series!!!

From The Publisher:
In 1944, American naval officer Lt. Wyatt Paxton arrives in London to prepare for the Allied invasion of France. He works closely with Dorothy Fairfax, a "Wren" in the Women's Royal Naval Service. Dorothy pieces together reconnaissance photographs with thousands of holiday snapshots of France--including those of her own family's summer home--in order to create accurate maps of Normandy. Maps that Wyatt will turn into naval bombardment plans.

As the two spend concentrated time together in the pressure cooker of war, their deepening friendship threatens to turn to love. Dorothy must resist its pull. Her bereaved father depends on her, and her heart already belongs to another man. Wyatt too has much to lose. The closer he gets to Dorothy, the more he fears his efforts to win the war will destroy everything she has ever loved.

The tense days leading up to the monumental D-Day landing blaze to life under Sarah Sundin's practiced pen with this powerful new series.

"The Word of God is alive and powerful." Hebrews 4:12 is on the front inside jacket, and this Bible completely lives up to that. "Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions." Psalm 119:18 inside the back jacket. What a beautiful way to illustrate just that with this Bible.

Fabulous illustrations, definitions and timelines throughout, the Word in the New Living Translation, with a Study guide and illustrated topics on each page. This is a large, heavy volume that you'll want to keep out and refer to.  Great for a "coffee table" book. It will take a long time to go completely through this book, and I haven't compared this translation to the strict King James Version, but I am sure that there are fabulous lessons to learn within.  A fabulous gift - any time of year - for yourself or someone you love.

From Tyndale: The Illustrated Study Bible brings Scripture’s message to life by giving readers an entirely new visual study experience. Hundreds of information-rich windows to the Bible world instantly communicate foundational truths and complex information in an understandable, compelling way for today’s visual generation. The who, what, where, when, and why of the Bible come alive with stunning photos, illustrations, infographics, and full color maps integrated seamlessly with background material, study notes, and theme articles. The Illustrated Study Bible empowers readers to draw closer to God by opening their eyes to Scripture’s living, powerful message.
