Wingspan by Heather Trim
I have just loved loved loved this series! I get totally involved and "feel" each of the characters. This is a make-believe land, but there are some similarities to our world. The idea that a huge rock is floating in the sky like a cloud and has people living on it is amazing. Not to mention that they have wings. And dragons. Yeah! dragons! They have some needs and conflicts with the people on the ground whose reasons have gotten buried and forgotten over the years, and evolved into a whole new thing. This book brings it all together, uniting generations from each race. Extremely entertaining and get lost in read. Loved it!!

The Queen's Fortune by Allison Pataki
"It was a rotten time to be alive in France, a time of fear so thick you could smell it in the streets, you could see it in the faces of those who passed . . ."
Very interesting story of someone you've probably never heard of before - I know I hadn't. Desiree Clary as a young girl during the French revolution met Napoleon and his brother. In fact they saved her brother. The Clarys were a wealthy family at a time when that was a death sentence in France. The Bonapart family was not wealthy, but Napoleon felt called to greatness even at that early age. Desiree is a meek, beautiful girl whose life becomes entangled with Napoleon and his whole family as he rises to power and after. Her life is woven along with theirs and she holds great importance, then and now, through her dependents, yet her name is not a well known one. The history you remember comes to life - the author tells the story in amazing detail and the story is highly interesting right to the end. Not a quick read; one to savor. A strong woman who had to learn how to be strong. Strength and character need to be built sometimes.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Foremost by Jody Hedlund
Wow. Another fast paced nail biter. Really hard to out down!
Three baby princesses are separated as their parents are murdered and the kingdom overthrown. They know they are orphans, but not their identity until 17 years later when one of the nuns, who had been tortured, reveals it to them. This book is about Emmaline, one of the twins, a healer, who is ready to become a nun herself. Until her identity is revealed and she has to run. She's another strong willed girl with a heart of gold. Edmund is also of noble blood, also hidden away since he was three, but raised by a warrior as an Elite guard. He's always loved Emmaline, and when he is chosen to guard her as they flee he's glad to take care of her. He has a trained harpy eagle and communicates with her and other animals in an ancient language, bringing a new dimension to the story. A dangerous journey, quest, involving Solomon's hidden treasure in Indiana Jones style as they run to find the answer to her set of clues and then find her sister the queen. Another book you can't put down, keeps you fully engaged. Another hit for Jody Hedlund. I guarantee you'll need the whole series!

Evermore by Jody Hedlund
Continuation of the series (read Always first) this being the story of the oldest Princess Constance, now known as Adelaide. A strong girl, raised along her boy cousins, equally able to fight and compete in tournaments. Yet she is also kind and compassionate towards others. From a Noble family, Christopher left home when his father pledged his loyalty to King Ethelwuf who usurped the good King. He came back after serving another good King from the north, intending to say his goodbyes to his family and never return. But it being Adelaide's 20th birthday, things progressed quickly as it was quietly revealed who she really was, rekindling her old memories in the process. A momentous change and revelation for her and her family. Since she is the rightful heir to the throne, evil King Ethelwuf wants to kidnap her and get the key she holds (one of 3) to the treasure of Solomon. A tense, twisting depthful story unfolds that will keep you on edge till the end of the book. Highly entertaining Recency with Christian lessons.

The Seamstress by Allison Pittman
Wow what a powerful story. A step into history.
It's set in France 1788 just before, then during the French revolution. There is a place not far from where I live that was constructed with the hope that Marie Antoinette would find asylum there, but sadly she never made it. Going there, seeing how it was made ready for her, I wished I could have made or helped to make some of the things for her. In particular I remember a quilt made from velvet pieces with beautiful embroidery around each piece. My grandmother made one similar and the women in our family all stitched on it. It enhances my feeling about Marie, the war and a seamstress she might have had.
Renee is a poor girl taken in as an orphan with her cousin by a man, not that much older than them, who runs a farm that's been in his family for generations. They don't have much but she delights in small things and loves her new family, growing in a Christian way. They have a friend who believes in eliminating the royalty from France. Near their house a carriage overturns and Renee mends the gown of a woman who was within. The mending is quite clever and fashionable. The woman is close to the queen, and decides to take Renee with her.
Renee, though quite young, finds a new life at the palace, and her skills make her a favorite. I delight in reading about the fabrics and thread as the story describes how she uses them. And in the beauty of the palace. The author skillfully tells several sides of the struggle at this time and I found it very difficult to put down. It's hard not to feel strongly for the characters, and its not a very happy time overall for any of them. I like the depiction of Marie Antoinette as a good person who tried to help the poor. A get-lost-in-it book for me. Huge depths of emotion.

Quotes from the book:
"The rain hits steadily, like whispers, and my ear strains to the occasional heavy droplet. To think, being in such a small space, every drop of it is splashing only inches above our heads."
"The people are their own god now. Their desires, law."
