1770 At the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The people living in Boston and Virginia, the rest of the country had come from England, had been loyal to their king. And then things changed. The brits attacked them and their homes. Very real characters, how they felt, their struggles with their changed world. Ruth had stayed loyal to the King but as they fled his men she was looking at sewing a flag for the patriots, embedded as her family was. A couple of romances too, crossing the patriotic line for a time, adding to the tension/trust relationships. Excellent read.

When writing my books, I study all sorts of things: soapmaking, rifles and muskets, and horses. What breeds come to mind when you think of horses?

Here in Texas today, quarter horses are quite common, although you will find a plethora of other types: Arabians, Tennessee Walking horses, Morgans, even Friesens! Interestingly, in the 18th century, the quarter horse did not exist. Thoroughbreds (“hunters”) were fairly common as well as carriage / early draft horses: Cleveland Bays and Canadians. Narragansett pacers were popular as riding horses; George Washington was partial to pacers, and their descendants include the Tennessee Walker. Ponies and mules thrived in the backcountry.

Exotic breeds were imported as well. I included a Friesen stallion in A Fallen Sparrow because—well, because I could. Friesens were part of the ancestry of one of the very first American breeds: the Morgan.

In my stories, the horses all have names and personalities. I hope you enjoy these characters as well as my human ones!

Tinsmith 1865 by Sara Dahmen

 



Marie is from a close Polish family, with two brothers living. The Civil war has just ended, and the mother just died. The father decides to sell everything and go with a wagon train West to where a friend is to work. The men in the family are all tinsmiths. Marie has watched them for years, always wanting to try. Her relationship with her father and brothers is deep. She is expected to cook and take care of them all, but doesn't really have those skills. She learns who she is throughout the story, always having to adjust to the men's actions. Very well written - you get lost in her struggle. It's interesting learning about tinsmithing. Heart wrenching story as she struggles to get out of debt and stay strong when others don't accept that she's female doing a man's trade. She struggles as hard to accept herself and fit in. There are a few spots with bad language that are disappointing, mostly towards the beginning. Another somewhat graphic sexual situation near the end. The suggestion of each would have been enough. The story is so compelling that I still gave it five stars but people I review for should be aware.

In Love's Time by Kate Breslin

 



Next in the series. It's not necessary to read the first one, but it's a great story you would wish to read. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, at least that's what's true for Clare, and is one of God's lessons. She's an unwed mother who had her baby taken away. Marcus got her baby back. Now she's closer to a life with Marcus but his secret spy work for MI6 takes him away again, in a way that leaves her in pieces. Tense, twisted, heart wrenching love story with an interesting conclusion. Follows some of the history during WW1 that's quite intriguing. Good Christian values. Characters to get attached to.

The Librarian of Boone's Hollow by Kim Vogel Sawyer

 



“It’s a bit unnerving making a trek to an unknown place, where everyone is a stranger.”

Kentucky 1856, Depression Era. Addie was at college, getting ready for her final exams when she's told that she can't continue, because her parents hadn't paid the bill. Quite a shock. She had to find a job. She had a part time job in a library and learned of a program that President Roosevelt started, bringing books to the poor people. There was an opening in Boone's Hollow delivering books and it paid very well. She was afraid but was left little choice. It turned out to be the hometown of a fellow college student that she briefly met recently. He was looking for work too. Deeply moving story of these two and the people of Black Mountain. Superstition, old grudges and ignorance were a hallmark of this small backwoods town, where everyone knew everyone else, back for generations. Beautiful story of God's love and Grace. You thoroughly get to know these people, true to life. Where it seemed hopeless, God's love and light shown in.

1800s Christian Historical set in Nebraska. You never know where one of the Mayflower books are going to take you, but you can guarantee you'll be attached to the characters quickly. In our lives, some of us are deeply hurt by others, and ostracized by no fault of our own. Forgiveness and compassion through God's love will see us through healing. Murder, mystery, friendship, understanding and love are woven throughout. Abby moves to a small town as a teacher, working for the secret service to catch the man who murdered her father. Dash is her partner, but also her old love who hurt her deeply. They make a good team as they work through misunderstandings on both sides, while forming lasting friendships in the town. Told with some humor and great lessons.
