Light To My Path (Brides of the West Book 5) by Erica Vetsch

I felt so full of love for these people. Rejected orphans sent away on a train, because they had disabilities. Eldora was one of them, older now and tasked with getting them to the next orphanage. Sam's Aunt tasked him with watching over them. Quite the trip, with serious struggles along the way for these who felt so unwanted. Beautiful story. You have to have your own opinions as to how it should go, becoming fully involved to the precious end.

More from Erica

Trains. I love trains. I got this love from my father, who is fascinated by all types of trains. When writing Light to My Path, I asked my dad lots of questions, and I relied heavily upon the things I learned at the train museums he took me to see.

One of our favorite train museums is in Duluth, MN. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum, in what was the former depot of the Gilded Age boomtown, is home to one of the most beautiful trains I have ever seen.

It’s name is the William B. Crooks, and it is a steam locomotive.

The William Crooks, the first train engine of any kind in Minnesota belonging to the St. Paul & Pacific Railroad by railroad tycoon James J. Hill of St. Paul. The William Crooks pulled its first train cars full of passengers on June 28, 1862. The William Crooks retired from passenger service in 1897.

Isn’t it beautiful? When the train retired from passenger service, it became the personal train of James J. Hill, The Empire Builder and owner of The Great Northern Railroad.

James J. Hill dreamed of pushing a railroad from Minnesota to the West Coast, through the Rocky and Cascade Mountains. It was along the Great Northern Railroad in March of 1910 that one of the worst train disasters in US history occurred. An avalanche took out two trains, killing 96 people.

This historic event inspired part of the story in Light to My Path. A train, trapped by snow, unable to go forward or back, and with an avalanche imminent. It’s the kind of book that calls for a warm blanket and a hot cup of tea!

You can read more about both the William Crooks and the Cascade Avalanche Disaster at these websites:

The Winged Tiara by J'nell Ciesielski

Conspirator. Thief. Charmer. Thrill-seeker. But never liar.

Quite a pair. They met in a whirlwind at the end of the War and married, only later finding out all they had in common. Both were rejected by others in their youth and ever since have been trying to prove themselves, both as thieves. Good ones. They're on the hunt for the same stolen jewels, pushing and pulling each other all the way. They're both smart and competitive, taking them into the most luxurious settings, where they each shine. Lots to sigh about. Fast paced race to a glorious end.

Tension and danger build. Twelve orphans who adopted each other as brothers and sisters, destitute and making a way on the streets of London any way they could. It's great to be with them all again, discovering their individual talents, seeing what God blessed them with, and the new relationships they find. This time a clockmaker and his daughter for Barclay. He's employed by a man who puts his "gifts" to work for good, but a thief isn't what Evelina expected, especially in proper society. But then his family is a lot closer to one another, and her fiancé has pointed out that she doesn't feel, that she's an automaton. Her father's invention will give their country an advantage but Germany wants it too. She has to go behind enemy lines to rescue her father, and is glad Barclay has connections. He and his family are there to help them out all along the way, bringing her family into better focus along the way. God uses us all, and doesn't expect any social status. Great story!

A story to get thoroughly wrapped up in without even realizing it.
Rosemary is from a world of orphans and thieves in London.  Peter is from a well to do family of property, and a friend of the King of England. Rosemary isn't a simple thief, she's more of a grifter. She's quite intelligent and is hired to act as a librarian, go to Peter's home and find proof that he's a German spy.  But he's not a spy. He has a personal reason for being somewhat reclusive, and his ancestors were from Germany. He’s a Gentleman, and Rosemary and her “family” have learned not to trust Gentlemen so it makes it easier for her to take the job.

Peter believes that he was born in England, but those records are not easy to find, since his family saved every bit of correspondence over the years and their manor home has a huge room full of books – many with his family in them. Rosemary has earned a reputation as being the best at what she does, and Mr. V comes to her for the job at Peter’s house. She taught herself German for another “project” and learned in a short amount of time how to act as a librarian.

It's interesting that Rosemary doesn't try to make up a story about herself, but instead talks of her "Family" by name.  It's Peter who is keeping something well hidden. There's great depth to the story that while you become more endeared to the unveiling of the characters, it gives you much to ponder. A layering of mysteries, spies and danger that keeps you hooked. Also one of the best laid out lessons of becoming a Christian I’ve read in a novel. Excellent read that you will love every minute of.

Publishers Description
Edwardian Romance and History Gains a Twist of Suspense
Rosemary Gresham has no family beyond the band of former urchins that helped her survive as a girl in the mean streets of London. Grown now, they concentrate on stealing high-value items and have learned how to blend into upper-class society. But when Rosemary must determine whether a certain wealthy gentleman is loyal to Britain or to Germany, she is in for the challenge of a lifetime. How does one steal a family's history, their very name?
Peter Holstein, given his family's German blood, writes his popular series of adventure novels under a pen name. With European politics boiling and his own neighbors suspicious of him, Peter debates whether it might be best to change his name for good. When Rosemary shows up at his door pretending to be a historian and offering to help him trace his family history, his question might be answered.
But as the two work together and Rosemary sees his gracious reaction to his neighbors' scornful attacks, she wonders if her assignment is going down the wrong path. Is it too late to help him prove that he's more than his name?

Pure pleasure!

Never less than a five-star review. Jen Turano’s books will DEFINITELY cheer you up. In some places you will positively be rolling on the floor with laughter. This is no different. Although the story is full of madcap comic scenes, there’s a great deal of depth to the characters – so it’s not all fluff. It’s nice if you read the previous books in the series, but not necessary to the story. Christian Historical Romance that you will love, love, love.  Be careful who you invite to your party! Gertrude is a personal companion to Mrs. Davenport who has a little problem with “lifting” pretty things from other society guests when she attends gatherings. And she’s very crafty at hiding it. And herself. Part of Gertrude’s job is to return said items afterwards, but this is the last time she’ll do it – and the first time she is caught. Luckily Harrison has sisters who have taught him how to act . . . and they had some romance novels that he read. But they may not have had the best advice – especially to just literally follow and try to apply. One thing you can guarantee, never a dull moment!
