Loyalty’s Pursuit by Shannon McNear

Allegiances divide, faith is tested, love endures. Story is set during the revolutionary war, told from the perspective of loyalists. Rob and his family are loyalists, and they own land in South Carolina, with rebels as neighbors. When the call to war came, he went as a sharpshooter for the British. Bess - who had come over from England - was a camp follower with her husband when he was killed. Rob asked her to marry him and their story begins. Very real, with so many conflicts, giving insight to the reality of war and what it takes to survive. They travel together as the war progresses. So many difficulties and feelings for each of them to handle, with times to try their faith. Loyalties to country, family, spouses are strengthened and tried - challenging what the right thing to do is and who to stand with and for. Hard to put down, has you turning the pages to see what they'll face next. Not a quick read, gives space to the conflicts and also shows how people from many countries fought for this country.

She needs a husband to survive. Right now, a wife is the last thing he wants.

August 1780. After the Battle of Camden leaves British camp follower Bess Eaton widowed, expecting a child, and stranded in enemy territory, she faces two impossible choices: a return to an England that offers her nothing…or marriage to a stranger before the army marches on without her.

Backcountry loyalist Rob MacFarlane has already buried a wife and son and has no intention of marrying again at this moment. But he can’t ignore the vulnerable widow in his path. What begins as an act of duty quickly becomes something far more complicated when he offers Bess protection—and a name.

As war rages and the British cause begins to crumble, their fragile alliance is tested at every turn. Loyalties fracture. Faith is questioned. And the lines between enemy and neighbor blur. To survive, Rob must decide what allegiance truly costs—and Bess must choose whether she can trust not only the man she married…but the God she’s never fully known.

I’m so honored to be part of yet another Celebrate Lit tour! This story especially is near and dear to my heart, because it was my very first long historical after writing fantasy for decades, the book I still had in process when I submitted the proposal for my first novella, Defending Truth, and the one which gave me the courage to try that story (and genre) to begin with.

The first draft of this story took five years to complete, in between other projects and real life. It was a hard sell to start with, I knew, being set within the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution but from the British and Loyalist viewpoint. Still, it eventually netted me both of my agents (Defending Truth’s RITA® nomination didn’t hurt there, either) while garnering interest from various editors—but didn’t actually sell until last summer. That means this story languished for more than 10 years—and then the Lord Himself practically dropped this contract in my lap.

The first story of how the concept came to me can be found here:

https://colonialquills.blogspot.com/2014/07/dispelling-colonial-myths-reenactor.html

It was on my heart from the beginning to portray the romance, such as it is, in a rather unconventional way—something closer to what I imagine real life must have been for such a situation. And I deliberately steered away from the usual flowery declarations of love between my main couple, while hoping to present them in such a way that the reader has no doubt by the end of the story that they do absolutely care for each other. My dear editor with Wild Heart Books helped me shape and refine the characters and story from what might have been a more straightforward historical fiction read into more of what a historical romance reader might expect. I hope those expectations are now met, but also that my readers also come away with a fresh appreciation for how our country came to be.

A Conflicted Betrothal by Denise Weimer (Scouts of the Georgia Frontier Book 4)

Absolutely wonderful characters that tie you in pieces all the way through. This takes place in the earliest time of our country's patriotism, with conflict and in-depth reasoning against the loyalist stance. Tense build up right to the very end. Parlor intrigue and the history behind the Stamp Act riots in Georgia make it quite interesting. The lessons of being true to oneself and one’s own convictions, and determining the point at which it is not only appropriate but imperative that we speak out are carried throughout. You have to love them, even the nasty twin sister.

About the Book

Book: A Conflicted Betrothal

Author: Denise Weimer

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release date: June 11, 2024

A King’s Ranger, a secret patriot, and a love that calls everything into question.

As a King’s Ranger on Georgia’s frontier, Ansel Anderson loves his independent life. But he’s also a second son, which means he’ll need the favor of someone influential to secure a land grant to settle his future. What better way to win support than by marrying the daughter of a member of the Governor’s Council? Yet Ansel’s straightforward plan is complicated by Miss Scott’s aloofness and his own growing sympathy for the passionate cause of the Liberty Boys.

As drawn to the enigmatic Ansel Anderson as Temperance Scott might be, he’d be more of a match for her feisty twin sister—who is all too happy to oblige. Not only would timid, nearsighted Temperance make a poor wife for a man trained for life on the frontier, but anyone she allows close to her must share her secret patriot ideals.

When Savannah erupts into riots and intrigue following the passage of the Stamp Act, Ansel is tasked with identifying a spy passing sensitive information to the Liberty Boys and the author of anonymous letters threatening those loyal to the governor. And as suspicions focus on the Scott family, which is he prepared to sacrifice—love or loyalty?

The American Revolution That Almost Happened a Decade Earlier:

The Setting for A Conflicted Betrothal

Savannah, Georgia, 1765. Sedition, secret letters, spies, and Sons of Liberty. An absolutely irresistible combination for an author of historical romance! All this intrigue centered around the passage and implementation of the Stamp Act.

The crowning grievance after a series of increasingly repressive acts levying taxes for Britain, the act required an imprint on official papers or a small blue paper affixed with tin foil to a document, including bills, calendars, warrants, deeds, court documents, commercial papers, degrees, newspapers, pamphlets, ads, almanacs, indentures, appointments, and even cards and dice. Anyone breaking the Stamp Act would be tried in admiralty court in Novia Scotia. Colonists objected to not having a local trial by their peers and because English parliament, not the local upper and lower colonial houses, set the tax.

Savannah seethed with discontent while awaiting the appointment of a stamp master and the arrival of the stamps.

Then a sensational article in the Georgia Gazette revealed that four local citizens had received letters signed by “the Townsman” accusing them of being the stamp master or having stamped papers in their possession. The men were instructed to publicly advertise their innocence or risk grievous results.

When protest and riots speared by the fledgling Liberty Boys repeatedly erupted, the governor called out his Royal Rangers to quell the potential rebellion. But the rangers and the militia were riddled with secret patriots, many of whom were the sons of prominent loyalists. Imagine being in the position where you are sworn to serve and protect—only, you suspect you may be on the wrong side.

That’s what happens to my hero in A Conflicted Betrothal. Georgia Royal Ranger Ansel Anderson is summoned from his frontier post to provide intelligence to his father’s friend, a loyalist judge. To obtain the land grant he needs, he’s also to court the man’s daughter, an ardent patriot. Patience Scott has no intention of letting herself fall for a sworn King’s Man…until anonymous letters threatening those loyal to the governor corner her into agreeing to a betrothal. But will their attraction to each other survive their conflicting loyalties?

Answering Liberty's Call by Tracy Lawson

Adapted from the writings of Jeremiah Asbury Stone, Benjamin and Anna’s third son, and other historical records.

Interesting Historical fiction based on a true story in 1778. Anna Stone of Virginia heard about her brothers and husband where they were stationed at Valley Forge PA - the horrible conditions, sickness, lack of food and clothing. She is a healer and feels she can take some needed provisions and help to them. She had a sturdy horse and a plan where to stay, some with relatives as she went. It was still dangerous to travel alone, especially as a woman. She ended up wearing some of her husband's clothes part of the way. When staying at a relative's house she met one of Washington's men and was asked to deliver an important message to the General personally, believing she would be less likely to be perceived as a messenger. She was then in even more danger than before. It's an interesting recount of what happened, well told, bringing the people to life. The experience brings Anna a new sense of liberty and freedom in her own life, and a great sense of accomplishment. Gives you a glimpse into people's lives as our country was fighting for its liberty and independence from England, the contrast of the well off and poor, evil and good people, and political corruption even in the earliest days of our country, some insight as to why our declaration of independence and early laws were written as they were. And the bravery of people who fought for our right to freedom. They should not be forgotten or taken for granted.
