Plant Lady Embroidery by Applemints

300 Botanical Embroidery Motifs & Designs to Stitch

Lovely book! I love flowers but haven't done embroidery in years. As it says, there are 300 motifs and designs in this book. I can't pick a favorite. First I saw the violets (!), then the lily of the valley, then little wreaths and as I kept going I realized that all of these designs suit me. What I found unique were the succulents and cacti. The flowers are in many different categories. There are color pictures of the finished work, then patterns to trace and detailed instructions on how to do the stitches. Now I have to think of where I'll put them. Oh yeah, there are inspirations for that in the book too. This is a good book for beginners or experienced embroidery artists.

I received this book free from the publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Ellie Claire 365-Day Devotional Journals

A joy to own! The shiny covers and insides are all gorgeous, made of heavy paper with beautiful designs. They're archive quality, non-bleed paper and made with acid-free paper and ink. They have a color coordinated elastic band to hold the book shut and a ribbon bookmark. The colors are rich and so very pretty. Each has a place under the devotional for the day to write your own journaling, lists and thoughts. It will look beautiful on your table or stand. There's a place in the front to write in your own personalization - excellent for gifting.

The Earth Is The Lord's and Everything In It

As the title says, this has a naturalist theme. If you love nature and the outdoors, you will enjoy this devotional (I do!). It has a beautiful peacock on the cover and each page, beautiful turquoise hues throughout that really appeal to me. One of the devotions is Devine Design. It asks if you had ever considered the purpose of fire ants, mosquitos or houseflies. If God designed the insects with such purpose, we know He designed us for far more.  Psalm 139:15 & 16 are quoted. Another mentions the beauty of flowers, singling out the Bradford Pear tree. It is a beautiful tree, with very pretty flowers, but the scent is horrible (we witnessed this in the spring in North Carolina - it's true!). 2 Corinthians 2:16 is referenced. You'll find that the journaling lines are slightly wider apart, perhaps encouraging decorative writing.

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Quite different in that the devotionals start with a line from a Christian song or hymn and finish with a quote from the bible.  One is titled Shield of the Spirit, saying that seven times throughout Psalms it says to take refuge in the shadow of God’s wings. I’ve always loved that image and find hope in it.  The cover and pages are really pretty with peach and cream colored flowers and feels slightly textured. Feminine and precious.

Peace Begins With Me

Each devotional starts with scripture and inspires finding peace by praising God. Beautiful marble design works for male or female readers. Simple yet elegant. Some examples from the book:  It’s In Our DNA. It references Genesis and mentions how many million men and women are on the planet right now, all made in God’s image. Amazing to consider. Another is titled The Battle Cry referencing Exodus, saying you need only be still.  The devotions are comforting and indeed peaceful, something we can all use in our daily life. The smooth cover feels cool to the touch yet seems to invite being held.

Beautiful book. Great photos and detailed information about the basics of embroidery. So many flowers with excellent detail. I like the way that the patterns are given, with a picture of the flower and the type of stitch near each area. The thing I would change is to have the picture of the embroidered flower next to the pattern so that you don’t have to flip back and forth.

Description from the Publisher:
Featuring 63 plants, this collection of embroidered flower motifs was inspired by a year of studying the garden. Beginning with the spring and going through the late autumn, the flower varieties presented here are presented with care and realistic detail. With beautiful color combinations, wonderful texture, and a studied but artful expression, this is an exquisite guide for those who love flowers and embroidery, and for those who want to share in the pleasures to be found with fabric and needle.

This Christian Historical Romance starts out in 1852 Cheshire, England. Love the cover, don't you? Our main character Charlotte is a botanist, from a long family of botanists, but is not accepted as an author or illustrator in her own right because she is female. So she assists her father (who is published) and submits her work under his name.

They are joined by Edward, a sheep farmer, who is quickly put to work as her father's assistant so that Charlotte can pursue a husband - something he and her Uncle have decided she must do. The thing is, even though he's excellent at the job, Edward is not quite what he seems.

It's not easy for Charlotte to go out in society, as she's never learned social graces. Thankfully she is befriended by another girl who helps her through.  In the process, she learns some valuable lessons and in turn touches the hearts of those she becomes close to - like a flower in bloom.

I struggled with reading this, as the eclectic nature of Charlotte and her father became somewhat frustrating. But by the same token I think this would be an excellent movie because their eccentric habits would be easier to watch and not have to be explained. And with the subject of botany, there is an opening for beautiful photography. There was subtle humor throughout the book that would be much more effective acted out.

In some ways I resonated deeply with the main character in this book. When I was younger I very much wanted to be a botanist. From the age of 10 I got books out of the library on biology and botany every summer and poured over them, nearly memorizing them. I was given a microscope for Christmas when I was 11. When I finally got to biology class in 10th grade, I was ecstatic. My first test for that class I got a 95 - for which I was singled out by the teacher and accused of cheating as everyone else had failed it. My deepest hurt. As time went on, he continually singled me out and ridiculed me in front of the class, and as a result I gave up on my greatest love as far as school went. I did continue to take books out from the library on weeds and wildflowers and had a sketchbook. After reading this book I think perhaps one of the reasons my teacher treated me so is that I was female, and a great love of the subject was not typical of girls, so he doubted that I could have done so well without cheating. But he never bothered to talk to me. It did change the direction of my life, left deep scars and I gradually wandered away from it down other paths. God had other plans for me. So I'm glad that Charlotte was able to continue to be a botanist and stay true to herself.

In reading the Author's notes at the end I also felt a deep connection with her. I almost enjoyed them more than the book. By her description, I too am an introvert.  I can be an extrovert for awhile, and am too self  aware. I prefer deep conversations with those I get close to as opposed to small talk. I have always felt that if I just try hard enough I'll be able to be like everyone else and often question/doubt my worth. I'm glad that Siri Mitchell has decided to write and offer her stories as she has a talent to be envied. In her I feel a kindred spirit and feel better that she shared that part of herself. It's nice to know someone of her recognition and success shares something with me.
