Line by Line by Jennifer Delamere

London, England 1881
The Telegraph was an important tool of business, opening up lines of communication that were impossible before. Businesses quickly took advantage of it to give them a competitive edge. Morse code was easy as long as you could memorize, listen and combine it correctly. Since Morse code was widely becoming known, they had to develop their own code words so that anyone who intercepted and listened in wouldn't know the message. Women were as good as men with this and entered the workplaces as telegraphers, alongside men. We all know what happens when you put men and women together in the same place all day. Lots of possibilities. Love issues and theft of information among them. When Alice comes into the office, she has a lot of experience, intelligence, and is highly efficient at her job. The guy who was already there was a slump but was related by marriage. Douglas was an intelligent and hard-working guy who had advanced himself from a poor life, becoming invaluable to the owner. Into this mix comes jealousy, social snubbing, social climbing, subterfuge moral code of the day and love. Mixed with a little humor to make it interesting. This is one of those fabulous authors who makes you forget the people aren't real. I found myself praying for them more than once. Excellent read that you don't want to see end.

Hearts of Steel by Elizabeth Camden

Set aside extra time to read this book because it's hard to put it down. A return to the Blackstone series, featuring Liam. Who doesn't love a strong, handsome Irishman with a good heart? He was kidnapped from the wealthy family when very young and later learned who he was but has had to fight many things to keep going. Maggie and her uncle built a business from the ground up. Liam and Maggie both experienced trauma in their lives but became more resilient for having survived it. Both lived in poverty and worked hard to overcome it, each getting down and dirty in their business to accomplish their goals. They're very well matched. Christian strength. This will take your emotions through the ringer, but you'll love it.

The Potter's Lady by Judith Miller

Christian Historical. 1872 West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Rose is from an Irish immigrant family, hard working stock, with a bricklaying background. She has gone to Art School in Philadelphia where even though she excelled she was treated badly because she was Irish. And was never good enough. As she went back to her loving family, they were in transition. (For a richer experience read the previous story.) Her brother had married into a wealthy family,  but they were not without turmoil and infighting. He is trying to make a decision as to which business to buy in another close-by town, and takes Rose with him. One of the businesses is a pottery, and Rose feels this is the opportunity she needs for her artistic abilities to contribute to the family business and make it grow. At this company there is a handsome assistant, Ryan, who is talented in his own right as well as a hard worker and quick learner (and Irish). He is invaluable to them. A wealthy social connection of her sister-in-law's mother is also from a family that owns a potting business. He us also a handsome young man. He courts Rose, but does not have the same kind of ambition, work ethic or moral values. The main characters are quite endearing, with full depth. They make you feel protective and want to root for them to be treated fairly and for them to win throughout the struggle and duplicity. This is also a fascinating story of pottery and how it is made at a factory level. Excellent read with Christian values shown. Togetherness and family come through.

Independent women and Greek sponge divers

Interesting story about sponge harvesting in the early 1900s. A diving crew and boats were brought over from Greece. Aman had invested in them and then died without mentioning it to his daughter - who had inherited the business but didn't want to be involved. She's a female doctor in the small town which is just off the gulf coast in Florida. Her friend is a female lawyer who happens to be Greek so she offers to handle it for her. But neither really knows what they're getting into. However the lives of 51 Greek men depend on this to be a success and diving is dangerous. I found this a little frustrating at first with all of the bantering back and forth between the characters, but quickly became enthralled with the story and found it hard to put down.
