Miss Blaire in Blackwell's Island: a Friends to Lovers Historical True Crime Novel (Heiresses of Adventure Book 1) by Grace Hitchcock

Wow. Just a bit in and I got this chilling feeling. Another wealthy heiress who is independent, unpredictable and not your average girl. She likes to fence. Then, ok, it's easy to see where this is going, how it will unfold. Then wowza! Intense progression, some serious breath holding. Very real and sadly based on information about the insane asylum and what happened to women who were sent there - and why they were sent there. Nellie Bly brought it all to light and Edyth's story is just one example. The romance is excellent as well.

She freely indulges in eccentric hobbies like fencing and riding her velocipede in her cycling costume about the city for all to see. Finding a loophole in the will, though, her uncle whisks Edyth off to the women’s lunatic asylum just weeks before her birthday. And Edyth fears she will never be found.

At the asylum she meets another inmate, who upon discovering Edyth’s plight, confesses that she is Nellie Bly, an undercover journalist for The World. Will either woman find a way to leave the terrifying island and reclaim her true self?

More from Grace

I am thrilled to share with you my FIRST novel in the HEIRESSES OF ADVENTURE series, MISS BLAIRE IN BLACKWELL’S ISLAND, which is set in New York City in 1887. I loved writing about Edyth Blaire, our cat-rescuing, spunky heroine who spends her days painting, fencing with her dreamy instructor, and avoiding society at all costs, which as you can imagine, comes back to haunt her before the end. I’ve never written about a character who despised reading, so that was a new one for me. Edyth just doesn’t like to sit still long enough to finish a book, but you’ll find out why later.

While writing this book, I am pretty certain the librarians at my local branch were wondering what in the world my hobbies are, judging from the stacks of fencing books for beginners, histories of New York crime in the 19th century, and Nellie Bly’s Ten Days in a Mad-House, and more.

The inspiration for this book came from Nellie Bly’s scandalous exposé for Joseph Pulitzer’s newspaper, The World. In reading Nellie’s articles, I was shocked at the grounds by which the asylum would commit women and that’s when I discovered a tiny mention about an heiress with family members who had her tucked away so they could have her fortune. . . and Edyth Blaire was born.

I hope you will enjoy reading about our eccentric leading lady and her fencing master hero, Raoul “Bane” Banebridge in this friends-to-lovers romance. If you are interested in seeing pictures of the asylum and to see what I pictured the characters looking like, check out my Pinterest board here.

White Bird movie trailer

Wow looks like a powerful and important film! "You forget many things in life, but you never forget kindness." So true. "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only the light can do that." Keeping the truth of the atrocities that happened in WW2, making it visible, may help to prevent it from happening again.

Synopsis:

From the best-selling author of Wonder, the book that sparked a movement to “choose kind,” comes the inspirational next chapter. In WHITE BIRD, we follow Julian (Bryce Gheisar), who has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school for his treatment of Auggie Pullman. To transform his life, Julian’s grandmother (Helen Mirren) finally reveals to Julian her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, a boy shelters her from mortal danger. They find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while the boy’s mother (Gillian Anderson) risks everything to keep her safe. From director Marc Forster (Finding Neverland and Christopher Robin), screenwriter Mark Bomback, and based on R.J. Palacio’s book, WHITE BIRD, like Wonder before it, is an uplifting movie about how one act of kindness can live on forever.

The Puppet Maker's Daughter by Karla M. Jay

Incredible story of a girl and her family in Budapest just before the end of WW2. In only nine months they went from living under restrictive regulations to wholesale mass deportations and the murder of 565,000. The war was almost over, so the Germans wanted to quickly liberate the city of all the Jews, wiping out all generations. This is an important story, and timely with the recent attack on the Ukraine by Russia, and the socialist leaning current government in the US. It shows the steps that lead to such evil and power growth, as well as what happens, the torture and hatred. These are lessons that should never be forgotten. Stories like these personify the horror and persecution that occurred. You can nearly feel every bit of the pain. What's even more incredible is that the Germans themselves are rarely involved in clearing Jews from the villages and steering them into ghettos outside the towns. It’s the local gendarmes who drive the villagers from their homes and allow looting of their properties. The Arrow Cross organizations were really vicious in their treatment of Jews and those who helped them. They were ruthless in hunting them down and executing large groups. Leaves an impression!

"The Germans do their best to make us forget who we are, Whose we are. Not just today, but for all time. We must work that much harder so that we don’t forget. How can we hope that the world will not forget us if we forget ourselves?”

Powerful story, a recounting of true events and people, adding a fictional piece that illustrates and brings the time and people to life. What it may have been like to live during the time of Hitler and the those who destroyed so many other people, with such cruelty you would never believe possible. This was in Poland after it was taken over by the Germans, enslaved, crushed. Two main families who fought every day to live. Of few survivors, the torture they endured. Of people who did all they could to save as many people as possible, at their own risk. Yet their hearts wouldn't let them do anything less, always wishing they could have done more. ". . . when someone is drowning, you jump in to save them, whether or not you can swim."  How this whole experience affected the minds of these persecuted people, trying to survive, witnessing so much inhumane suffering, losing their families. And the amazing foresight of many. This story also tells of the new families that came about as their own were torn apart. How love can continue, lives reformed. How much a difference even one person can make. And the heroes that were born.

It makes you realize how much love and family mean to you. What it is that makes you who you are, what holds you together. What is really most important to you in the life that you are living. It also makes you appreciate the victims of persecution from this time. Making you realize how quickly things like this can happen under the wrong leadership, and hope that it will never happen again.

"“Adonai makes a way when there appears no way. It is His specialty . Remember the Red Sea." The words of her old friend came back to her, just as they did so often when Sophie felt at her wits’ end."

What a good book!
I love Christian Historical Fiction - but this goes one better, because it's biographical. It's one thing for people to live through experiences like this, but to tell the tale so well is a talent.  I highly recommend this for any WW1 WW2 enthusiasts, as well as for anyone who wants an engrossing story. There's no doubt that the scenes described are real. The things that Ray went through and survived to tell are,  well, incredible that he survived it, horrific that he experienced it. And what it was like for Betty. What it takes to be a nurse during a war, the dedication to leave home and nurture lives of people you've never met before - who've had such damage to their bodies and minds.

Then to begin young love, and go through such trials of separation, faithfulness and belief. There is strong Christian faith throughout, lessons and demonstrations. It's so well told, you don't want to put it down. I can't give higher praise for a book - I would give it 10 stars.
