The Master Craftsman by Kelli Stuart

Interesting story where you learn more about Faberge than you probably already knew. He was a master craftsman who designed the first Faberge egg that was a gift to the Tsar. It brought him great success and notoriety. 50 plus eggs were created over the years. He didn't design them all, and even of those he did design, he didn't make all of the components. He employed other master craftsmen who each specialized in a skill. He loved all of his employees like family and was good to them. When the Tsar was deposed all who were associated with him were as well. Russia was not friendly to them, and they had to flee.

This is a time skip story to modern day. Ava's father is a treasure hunter and wasn't around much when she was growing up. She goes to him as he's dying and learns of an unfinished quest to find a lost Faberge egg. Since she's like him, she jumps at the chance to find it. Excellent mystery, learning about St Petersburg, Russia and Faberge. Danger and murder thicken the plot.

What a beautiful romance! So creative in how it’s written. I love the way the characters think. The character Griffith is a Duke and carefully reasons everything out, sometimes with the help of his friend and brother-in-law who is equal to the task. He is pressured to get married and through his reasoning chooses one of the social debutantes who is not in the limelight, yet is on the fringe. Not the most beautiful, but socially prominent and acceptable. However, there are a few things he didn’t know when he was making his decision – like the fact that the girl was in love with someone else and she was using her cousin as a shield from him. And that her father was using her cousin as bait for his own political agenda - the cousin who is uncommonly beautiful and completely in the limelight. The story is very well woven, has good depth and held my interest through every line.

Ok, reading the description of this book they had me at Library. In the early 1800's the main character Anna works at the Library of Congress as a map librarian. How cool is that? I love the way the author put it - the books there contain wisdom of the ages. Awesome.  She's a strong, knowledgeable female character. Her father was a navy scientist who mapped the floor of the ocean and was lost at sea. While at work Anna is able to do some research and found there was an error in the old naval report. Which is not a well received message for the navy.

Luke is a popular Congressman with some serious family issues, but he's in Washington to serve his state and do some good. Anna gets his attention when she talks back to him, but then he realizes she could be useful. Politics is the name of the game, and he needs all the help he can get in a struggle with the Speaker of the House.

This book is very well written. Since Elizabeth Camden is a research librarian herself, she puts a lot of interesting detail into the book. There's a lot of depth to the characters and you get to know all their issues, which make them all the more endearing.  A sweet romance evolves, and there's an element of danger and secrecy that makes this one you don't want to put down until you know everything. But then you don't want to leave the characters when the story ends!

From the publisher's description of the book: "From the gilded halls of the Capitol where powerful men shape the future of the nation, to the scholarly archives of the nation's finest library, Anna and Luke are soon embroiled in secrets much bigger and more perilous than they ever imagined. Is bringing the truth to light worth risking all they've ever dreamed for their futures?"
