Calico Canyon (Petticoats and Cowboys Book 2) by Mary Connealy
About the Book
Book: Calico Canyon (Petticoats and Cowboys Book 2) Author: Mary Connealy Genre: Christian Historical Romance Release Date: April 28, 2026 From beloved author Mary Connealy comes a delightful Western adventure brimming with danger, laughter, and unexpected romance—a tale of a runaway teacher, a bewildered widower, and five rambunctious boys who need a mother whether they want one or not. Perfect for fans of Tracie Peterson and Karen Witemeyer. Grace Calhoun never imagined teaching school in Texas would lead to marriage—especially not to the infuriating Daniel Reeves. When Grace flees her adoptive father’s cruelty by hiding in a stranger’s wagon, the town parson insists on an immediate wedding, leaving Grace trapped in marriage to a stubborn widower with five unruly sons—the very boys who made her teaching job impossible. Daniel Reeves has no intention of risking his heart—or another wife—to childbirth. Still grieving the loss of his first wife, Daniel wants nothing to do with the prim schoolmarm forced into his family. He’ll build her a house and provide for her needs, but he’ll keep his distance. His sons need a mother, but he refuses to fall in love again. Snowed in together for a long Texas winter, walls begin to crumble. As Grace discovers the courage she thought she’d lost, she transforms from a frightened woman on the run to a fierce protector of her new family. The boys who once tormented her become the children of her heart. And the husband who swore to keep his distance? He’s finding it harder each day to resist his spirited wife. But when Grace’s dangerous past catches up to her, she must choose between running again or standing firm in the faith that brought her to Calico Canyon—even if it costs her everything. A tender tale of found family, healing love, and the faithfulness of God in the midst of life’s unexpected turns.Click here to get your copy!

I think of Calico Canyon as my husband’s life growing up. He is sixth of seven sons. A family of all boys. His mom, my mother-in-law, was the coolest lady I’ve ever known. That woman could handle everything and never be other than sweet and generous and so funny. She’s gone now but for all the years she was in my life, I’d say she was my best friend. All those boys! She was the living embodiment of rolling with the punches and not sweating the small stuff. Those brothers…they are the inspiration for this book but my mother-in-law read it and said, her boys were so much better behaved than those boys in Calico Canyon, and she’s right about that…no boys could be worse than the Reeves boys. This book is the embodiment of the forced marriage. Two people caught in a completely innocent compromising situation. Nothing will do but immediate marriage after Grace spends the night with Daniel. But there were five boys in that cave with us! Not gonna save you, Grace. Grace is a school marm and those boys have been a torment to her ever since they’d shown up at school. Now, due to Grace needing to hide from her abusive, adoptive father, who has tracked her down to this tiny town in Texas, she’d ended up under a tarp over Daniel’s wagon. He takes her home and she has no choice but to stay quiet under that tarp until it’s too late to take her back. The wedding scene from Calico Canyon was, for many years, what I considered the funniest thing I’d ever written. Very hard work to get that scene right. Grace is confused when she’s found with Daniel by the parson. Oh, good. Someone who will give me a ride back to town. The parson is saying the vows. Grace is happy to take a ride. The parson’s wife is urging the parson to hurry. Daniel is trying to put a stop to it. The boys are all horrified to see their hated teacher. Mayhem ensues. It was a lot of fun to get right. Lots of moving parts in that scene. And then a blizzard snows the gap that leads into their canyon shut and they have to spend the winter trying not to kill each other. And of course, falling in love. I hope you enjoy Calico Canyon. The fumbling, clueless cowboy. The innocent, befuddled school marm. The unruly boys who don’t see why she can’t cook and why she won’t go home. The danger, circling the outside of their canyon, waiting for the gap to open so he can avenge himself on the daughter that send him to prison.Blog Stops

Indian Territory
Never in her life had Rebekah Bailey done anything so daring, but then she’d never been this desperate before. She peered over her shoulder at the dilapidated house as she tiptoed toward the barn. Good. Still dark.
The full moon illuminated the rickety A-frame shack that had been her home for as long as she could remember. The breath she’d been holding came out on a ragged sigh. At least she’d managed to get out of the house without Curtis hearing her. But she was far from safe.
Her heartbeat resounded in her ears, and she was certain her closest neighbors, who lived miles away, could hear it. Hugging her ma’s ancient carpetbag against her chest, she quickened her pace.
A sharp creak in the direction of the house jerked Rebekah from her reverie. With a quick tug on the reins, she turned Prince west and kicked his sides. West toward the open plains and Indian Territory. Then northwest toward Denver–and freedom. She prayed it was the last place Curtis would think to look for her.
The chanting of tree frogs gave music to her ride, and an owl hooted somewhere in a nearby tree. She used to love the sounds of the night, but now they only reminded her that she was alone. Hoping to ward off the night chill, she tugged her frayed cloak around her. The world seemed normal, asleep, as it should in the middle of the night. But she felt anything except normal. Her world had fallen apart this evening with Curtis’s declaration. Nothing would ever be same for her. She shivered at the memory. “I’ve made a deal with Giles Wilbur,” Curtis had said, grinning with pride. “Swapped you for a half side of beef and some moonshine. In the morning, you’ll be moving in with him and be his woman.” Thoughts of the filthy, drunken sloth of a man more than twice her age made her blood run cold. How could Curtis expect her to live with Mr. Wilbur without the sanctity of marriage? How could he simply swap her like she were livestock—something to be bartered? Bile churned in her stomach and burned a path to her throat. Tears blurred her vision and streamed down her cheeks.
She’d never felt so alone. Completely alone–as though not a single person in the world cared for her. But the gentle touch of the wind to her cheeks reminded her of the One who never failed. Rebekah turned to her heavenly Father as Prince trotted down the dark road. “Protect me, Lord–and show me the way. And Father . . . oh, Father, give me courage for the ride ahead and strengthen Prince’s old bones–”
The faint sound of approaching hoof beats intruded on Rebekah’s prayer.
Oh, no! Curtis!
She was certain her heart would jump clear out of her chest. The reins nearly slipped from her trembling hands. Fear of what was behind her overpowered the fear of what was ahead.
Taking a deep, determined breath, and with a firm grip on the reins, Rebekah dug her heels into Prince’s side.
“He–yah!!!” she cried softly.
Prince vaulted into a gallop and raced down the road.

The White City by Grace Hitchcock
Chicago 1893. Christian Historical Romance. Winnie is a young girl of society who has lost her mother and was raised by her father, an Inspector on the police force. She also reads a lot of romance novels. The World Fair is taking place in the city, bringing crime with it. She is at the fair and sees a young woman being abducted. Although no one really believes her, her detective skills kick in and her father is forced to assign a detective from the force to watch over her. Very well written, a pleasant read that is a page turner as it goes on. Good suspense that isn't totally predictable. Entertaining and satisfying story.

My Sister's Prayer by Mindy Starns Clark & Leslie Gould
A book set in two time frames, present and early 1700s. Two present day sisters are going through a rough time, and their grandmother thinks they would like to know about two of their ancestors who had some similarities. It helped the present day young women see some things about themselves. None of the young women in either time frame have an easy time of it. I found it hard to put down, especially wanting to know what happened to the girls from 1704. It kept me engaged till the end.

Description from the Publisher
Women of Fearless Devotion
Virginia, 1704

Leaving her Huguenot family behind, she sets sail for America, only to realize that her younger sister Berta has been kidnapped and forced on board the very same ship. Whom can Celeste trust? The dashing soldier? Or the vigilant carpenter who remains by their side in the perilous New World?
Virginia, present day
Madeline "Maddee" Talbot has her hands full when she agrees to take in her younger sister, Nicole, following a serious car accident. The young women grew apart when Nicole fell into drug addiction, and Maddee prays this will be the start of a better life for her sister. But as they investigate a trauma from their childhood, Maddee must keep a diligent eye on Nicole—and the shadowy figure watching them from afar.

Surprised By Love by Julie Lessman
Heartbreaking romance from beginning to end!
Another hit from Julie Lessman. Honestly, you cannot go wrong with one of her books! This is book three in The Heart of San Francisco series, set during San Francisco's Gilded Age. I had not read the previous two books, but was able to grasp the story line and enjoy it without a problem. I had read the Daughters of Boston series and this is in some ways similar in that it involves a large Irish family, yet with entirely different people. And I do mean people as these are more than characters to you even part way through the book.
Meg is a young woman who as a child was overweight and made fun of. She's just come home from Paris, all grown up, with a new figure and new look that will melt the boys - and silence anyone who ever ridiculed her before. She's still a sweet girl on the inside though, and most of all wants to see Bram, who acted as a protective older brother to her before. Meg is granted an internship to be a lawyer, and she has interests in the medical field as well. She is thrust into an office with Devlin, the one person who tore her apart relentlessly in the past. He cannot see her in the same way anymore, and falls head over heels for her now. He's a Christian and sincerely apologizes for what he did to her in the past, so he becomes more appealing to Meg, especially since Bram denies his love for her.
Bram is so glad to see Meg again and to know that she has thrived while away. He's pretty surprised though at the beautiful young woman she's become, and is drawn to her in a different way now. But he has some secrets that have never come to light before, and because of his guilt agrees to marry another girl to help his father and his business.
Threaded all through this is another back story between Meg's mother and Bram's boss. The whole story comes together with the biblical story of Abraham, who accepted whatever God wanted from him no matter the cost to himself. There are lessens to be learned by all as this is applied to the characters in the book. It's a tale of intense romance, conflict and passion, corruption, deception and revelation. You'll be pulled along and if you're like me will end up in tears at the end!
