Bringing a Swedish Christmas to the American West

By Carrie Turansky

In my novella, A Trusting Heart, part of the Christmas Mail-Order Brides Collection, Annika Bergstrom, who is originally from Sweden, leaves her home in Chicago and travels to the rugged Wyoming Territory in 1880 to marry a man she’s never met. Though she carries only a small trunk, she brings with her something far more meaningful—cherished Christmas traditions from her homeland.

Swedish Christmas celebrations begin early with the first Sunday of Advent. Annika remembers her mother lighting a candle each week leading up to Christmas, filling their home with warmth and anticipation. In her new Wyoming home, she lights a candle, longing for connection and clinging to faith and hope as she begins this new chapter of life.

December 13 brings one of the most beloved Swedish traditions—St. Lucia Day. In Sweden, the youngest daughter dresses in a white gown with a red sash and wears a crown of candles, waking her family with coffee and saffron buns. Annika lovingly bakes these sweet rolls with her intended’s daughter, hoping it will draw them all closer.

As Christmas Eve—Julafton—arrives, Annika prepares a modest version of a Swedish smörgåsbord: roasted ham, root vegetables, and creamy rice pudding. She hides an almond in the pudding, smiling as everyone at the table eagerly searches their bowls. According to Swedish tradition, the one who finds the almond will marry in the coming year. Laughter and joy fill the room, and Annika feels a growing sense of belonging with her new family.

Swedish traditions add depth and richness to A Trusting Heart, reminding us that wherever we go, the light of Christmas can shine brightly—especially when carried by a trusting heart.

We hope you’ll enjoy reading Christmas Mail-Order Brides which includes three novellas: The Prodigal Groom by Vickie McDonough, A Trusting Heart by Carrie Turansky, and Mrs. Mayberry  Meets Her Match by Susan Page Davis. Each heartwarming story that will transport you back to a joyful, old-fashioned Christmas.

The Mail-Order Standoff by Angela Breidenbach; Margaret Brownley; Susan Page Davis; Vickie McDonough

4 Grooms Are Stymied When Brides Get Cold Feet - 4 Historical Stories

Things don't always start out as expected in Mail Order matching, but when the couples include God in their lives, they can't go wrong.

Right on Time
1883 Kentucky and Montana
Looks can be deceiving. An English Lord, third son, wants to be a veterinarian and learn ranching, to make a life for himself. Which is why he answers an ad for a mail order husband placed by the Ranch owner. Tara, his daughter, isn't in on the deal. They make things tough for him, but he holds his ground, proving to be a valuable asset. Deep story with tragedy and success and life lessons.

Pistol Packin’ Bride
Absurdly, hilariously sweet and romantic. Very entertaining when a handsome lawyer who had been adopted by three families in a small town in Texas meets his mail order bride that he knew nothing about. She has a lot to take in, since she also accidently shot him and is sent to jail in the town where they all love him.

The Bride Who Declined
1885 Boston then Texas
An upscale Boston seamstress inherits a ranch when the man she had answered an ad for a mail order bride, and had turned him down, died. But there are conditions. Jack is the Foreman and helps her get to know the ropes. Another man shows up thinking the Ranch should have been his, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to get it. God throws us unexpected roads, but He has a plan with our best interests at heart.

Twice the Trouble by Vickie McDonough
Cactus Creek, Texas Early May 1888
Irish twins answer a Mail order bride ad to get away from their aunt. When they get to Texas they decide to gain some time and won't tell the men their names. Interesting story of their getting to know one another and find their true matches, and decipher God's plan for them all.

What a special little town where everyone is good hearted and watches out for then others. Oh that's not to say that they aren't a little rough around the edges, but each is endearing. Founded by mostly single men, a bunch if them decide to send to a matchmaker for brides.

Helena wants to be sure that her brides are well cared for before she sends them out. Usually she can correspond to make this determination, but with this many men it is easier to pay a visit with her assistant. Neither of them expect the experience to be as it ends up! Wonderful read to get totally lost in for awhile.
