Chasing the Horizon by Mary Connealy

(A Western Light Book #1): (A Suspenseful Historical Western Romance Set on the 1800's Oregon Trail)

I love a good wagon train story and pioneer story, and this is both. With some extra high society influence and villains as well. Ginny has been put into an asylum and her daughter and former employee plot to get her out and go west to hide. Wonderful full dimension characters you either love or hate. Very interesting. Looking forward to spending more time with them in the next book!

I received this book free from the author, publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

From the Back Cover

Her only chance at freedom waits across the horizon.

Upon uncovering her tyrannical father's malevolent plot to commit her to an asylum, Beth Rutledge fabricates a plan of her own. She will rescue her mother, who had already been sent to the asylum, and escape together on a wagon train heading west. Posing as sisters, Beth and her mother travel with the pioneers in hopes of making it to Idaho before the others start asking too many questions.

Wagon-train scout Jake Holt senses that the mysterious women in his caravan are running from something. When rumors begin to spread of Pinkerton agents searching relentlessly for wanted criminals who match the description of those on his wagon train, including Beth, she begins to open up to him, and he learns something more sinister is at hand. Can they risk trusting each other with their lives--and their hearts--when danger threatens their every step? --This text refers to the paperback edition.

A Summer at Sagamore by Lisa M. Prysock

Very good read, would make an excellent summer book. Such likable characters, wealthy but down to earth people with clothes beautifully described. Who wouldn't like a girl who reads Grace Livingston Hill? I once camped on an island near Sagamore, it's a very beautiful area. Lots of piney beauty and fresh air. A mystery threads through the rocky and sigh-able romance and Christian wisdom, life lessons.

I received this book free from the author, publisher and CelebrateLit book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Author: Lisa M. Prysock

Genre: Historical Christian Romance

Release date: March 14, 2023

Can summer love survive amid mystery and mayhem?

When Abigail Greenwood and her cousins settle in for their annual summer retreat at the stunning and impressive Sagamore Resort in the Adirondacks,  all she wants is to spend as much time as possible plunking out stories on her typewriter. But when her cousins insist she join them in the tradition of choosing a beau to adore from a distance during their stay, she reluctantly plays along, setting her sights on a mysteriously quiet and aloof guest. What started as harmless fun soon changes as Abby finds herself captivated by debonair—and handsome—Jackson Gable. Who is he, and why does his arrogant amused smile exasperate her so much?

When a series of events causing mayhem and mischief begin to occur at Sagamore, journalist Jackson Gable is determined to get to the bottom of it, since his father is an investor of the resort. Jack has a nose for mysteries, but he may have to use his recently earned law degree and some of his posh family connections to sleuth out the culprit. Are the events connected? Why are they happening? And why can’t he get the beautiful Abby off his mind?

More from Lisa

Behind the scenes at A Summer at Sagamore

When a dear writing friend approached me about writing a contribution for Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts, my heart leapt. The Gilded Age is my favorite time to write. Ask me to write anything from 1870 to 1910, and I’m hooked. I love the way traditions are colliding with progress and changing the world in this era.

An exciting time for women, I knew the heroine, Abigail, would be a writer, enthralled with her new, clunky, heavy manual typewriter. Independent, set to inherit her grandmother’s wealth, she would not be looking for romance. I wanted Abby’s grandmother, cousin, and sister to give us plenty of humor and fun along the way. Meanwhile, Abby, would portray a young woman on the brink of writing about her faith, inspired by a few pioneer writers and a previous experience to join the endeavor to pave the way for others to do the same.

Along comes our hero, Jackson. Jack has this Clark Gable kind of vibe, only younger, more handsome. He has strong faith, but it’s quiet, stifled by his position in society. Abby brings out the best in him. I loved watching their romance blossom and their trust in God grow amid the mystery of all the happenings at the Sagamore. More themes came out of the book than I expected. I can’t wait to share it with you.

A Pursuit Of Home by Kristi Ann Hunter

1800s Do you like mysteries? This will keep you on your toes. Jess is a girl to be liked, admired and in awe of. An interesting world of intrigue with just the right mix of servants, high society, intelligence and sweet personalities. A royal family runs from Napoleon's henchmen in this French country. Even though they are exiled, their family stories are repeated to them, and Jess is given some key information to keep safe and later rebuild their kingdom. In the meantime as she is in hiding she becomes a spy and master of disguises in England. Derek has been brought in to the Manor to access and catalog artwork. He has special knowledge that Jess needs to unravel an encrypted diary of her Grandmother's. And save a monarchy. A story that is richly told right to the end, and is a wonderful continuation of the Haven Manor series. It's great to revisit these characters and see Jess's long awaited story unfold. A fabulous way to spend time. Fabulous author. This one's a keeper.

Her husband disappeared just after they ran away to get married. The place, let alone the elopement scandalous and against her family's wishes. But she can't make it alone and has to go back home to her family. She sold everything she could to survive and he hadn't returned. It's not easy for her to face her family and she misses her husband. She doesn't know that he's been imprisoned with his men. It's a difficult journey for both of them and their families, and difficult to stay together, with people on both sides keeping them apart. They both learn a lesson in faith and forgiveness. Excellent read - one to get lost in!

Chuckle, then roll on the floor and laugh. And then it's melt-your-heart tender - you really know where this character is coming from. You want to pray, give them a shoulder and cheer them on - both the girls and the guys. All are both strong and soft at the same time, on a faith filled journey. Hold your  breath from laughter and hold your breath from danger. Oh and throw in a lot of romance. Wow another hit from Jen Turano! A fabulous continuation of the series and return to people you love. Hold your sides and get some oxygen.

This story takes place in England when aviation was just getting started. The Wright brothers had just made their historic flight in Paris and inspired others to try their skills at making their own plane and flying. It also inspired their onlookers and made investors of some. And pointed out a country's vulnerabilities to planes being able to fly over.

Bella's father is a wealthy self-made newspaper man looking for prestige in society to go with his wealth. She of course is expected to marry a man with a title to bring that social connection to the family. But she is like her father and likes to write and be in the middle of current affairs.  And Bela and her father share a fascination for aviation.

Jack happens to crash land his plane on the Grayson's field as they're touring their new estate. His mother wasn't married and he doesn't know who his father is. He's in the running to design airplanes and fly across the channel and has captured the attention of Grayson and his daughter. With only these facts he wouldn’t be in the running as a suitor for Bella – unless he wins perhaps, and captures the prize money and fame.

It's not unusual for any of us to examine our self-worth and standing with others we live around. It's easy to let others conception of who or what we are to limit us. It's just so satisfying to watch people break out, stand tall and prove to themselves and others what they really are capable of. In this story it applies to both Jack and Bella, standing on both sides of high society lines. Each has to follow their own plan that God has for them in order to excel.

Reminiscent of Jayne Eyre, Christian Historical fiction that you won’t want to end. Would make an excellent PBS movie with similarities to other English series. It’s great to be back to Ivy Hill, although I believe that you would enjoy the book without reading the previous books. The story involves more than one lady and their lives. They are ladies who were part of Society but for various reasons are no longer able to live that life and had to earn the means to support themselves. Many of us can identify with having a difficult path to walk, perhaps one that we did not expect, but with God’s Grace we find that He has provided for us and it’s not a bad life after all, in fact it was meant for us.

Rachel is able to stay with her friend Mercy in her family’s home after her parents move away. The ever helpful Ladies Tea and Knitting Society in Ivy Hill is a great help to the girls. They are business women as well and understand the struggles involved with having to support one’s self. Following their advice, Mercy is able to let Rachel start a circulating library in a couple of the rooms, which gives Rachel a way to support herself. But Mercy doesn’t realize that her mother has other plans for her. Rachel had thought she was going to marry Sir Timothy, but when her father ran into financial ruin, his family would no longer allow an affiliation with her. Since they are still living in the same area he does see and talk with her, and helps her in ways that he can. A donation of some books to her library opens up a whole new area for them, and ends up uncovering a secret they never would have dreamed of.
