A HEROINE DISGUISED AS A MAN

I love a heroine in disguise! It’s one of my favorite tropes, but I don’t often get to write stories with that plot. It adds so many fun and funny moments to the storyline. J

In Rocky Mountain Journey our heroine goes undercover as a “man” to travel with a group of trappers so she can reach her destination safely. Numbers meant a better chance of survival back in those days. I love that Grant, our hero, was the only man in the trapper group who looked close enough at the young “man” riding with them to realize things weren’t what they seemed at first glance.

One challenge that definitely arises in a story where the heroine is pretending to be a man is the development of the romance between her and the hero. In this case, Faith was pretending to be her (fictitious) brother Frank. Grant had met Faith in an earlier chapter before she took on the disguise, and he immediately noticed the resemblance between “Frank” and the woman whose memory still lingered with him, even days later. Every time he looks at “Frank” while they’re traveling with the trappers, he recalls the memory of Faith by the waterfall…and the attraction to that woman grows a little more every time. What a shocking surprise when he discovered she’s riding just ahead of him on the trail the entire time!

The Lumberjills: Stronger Together by Joanna Foat

 

1940. When the war started the UK didn't have much lumber stockpiled. A resource that they badly needed, so they opened it up for women to apply. Thousands did. These girls are tough beyond tough in this group. Man did they fight one another. Most had it tough at home growing up. A few of the girls' backgrounds come out here. Excellent read that keeps you engaged to the end. I could have done without some of the language but overall, it was mild.

The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel

 

One of those unforgettable stories of survival during WW2 and one that deeply resonated with me. It's about Jews who escaped ghettos into the forests of Poland. Vast forests that sustained those who had knowledge of what to do. This is full of detailed descriptions valuable for any survivalist. I have been long fascinated by skills to live off the land, this doesn't disappoint.
Yona was kidnapped as a toddler and taken into the deep forests of Germany and Poland, taught all she needed to live, as well as languages, geography and other information as any student in a city school would get. Deeply engaging, full of knowledge and life philosophy.
She later learned how to live and interact with others after her kidnapper died and she encountered people who were fleeing from the ghettos into the forest. She helped them to hide and survive, they expanded her knowledge of people. A story of triumph and love. 10 star rating needed here.
Something to be aware of, a brief explicit sexual scene and one or two minor scenes I was able to easily skip over. Not a surprise I appreciated, yet not anything major or prolonged throughout the book.

Dauntless (Valiant Hearts) (Volume 1) by Dina L. Sleiman

I seem to be reading books within a theme - mostly about strong women. This is another and is geared towards young adults - but I really enjoyed it even though I'm old.  I have always liked tales of Robin Hood and the idea of living off the land. When I was younger I spent many, many enjoyable hours in the woods near our home.

Lady Merry Ellison, daughter of a Baron who tried to assassinate the King, has been forced to live and hide in the forest after the King tried to wipe out their entire village. But Merry and the children from the village were hidden away before the Kings' men came through. After they were gone it was up to Merry to feed, clothe and take care of everyone - and continue to keep them hidden from the revengeful King. She had learned aerobatic tumbling skills from a young age and to live in the forest - strength, anonymity and restraint mottoes foremost - so she was well equipped to lead this young band. But sometimes they needed to take from the rich to survive.

Merry's friend Timothy Grey, the ninth son of a Baron, grew up with her and shared the same motto and skills. He was betrothed to Merry, but Timothy's family did not join with Merry's father in the assassination attempt and stayed on the good side of the King. Timothy thought Merry was killed long ago. In time since he longed to do something magnificent to earn a title of his own, as he was far down the line in his own family.  Capturing "The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest" would impress the nobility and give him a chance of his own. Little did he know who those "ghosts" were.

This is the story of how Merry and Timothy find each other again, and the struggle to survive and do what is right, no matter the danger. Definitely a great read, pulls on your heartstrings and has deep roots in faith. Highly recommended! I really liked the cover too. Dina L. Sleiman is a new author to me, and can add me to her fan list. I'm looking forward to more in the series.
